In or Out? ... What's Your Decision?

The expansion of technology into modern sport is making the job of the umpire easier. The impact has been seen to greatest effect in tennis, where technology has been used to judge whether a ball is ‘in’ or ‘out’, and in cricket where slow-motion replays are able to judge whether a batsman* is ‘in’ or ‘out’. However this technology is only available at major, often international, sporting events. What about county games of cricket where technology is not available? Can mathematics be used to make a decision about whether a batsman* is ‘in’ or ‘out’ from a still photograph, perhaps even taken by the umpire or a casual photographer? This case will investigate such scenarios.

*the term ‘batsman’ is used throughout as a generic term for both male and female players.
